Chrik - s/t - CD (2010)

Labels: self released
Review by: Samuel Fowler

Had the pleasure of seeing these coves live recently. Blow me down if
i wasn’t sufficiantly impressed enough to grab a slice of
polycarbonate to take home with me.

Theres a health warning here, if the idea of more droplets from the
Cap’nfootballmo cloud cascading down from on high fills you with
uneasy dread you need to grab an umbrella, get a fast vehicle and keep
the fuck ahead of the storm front. GO! Now! there’s still time.

I see, you’re still here, Smart choice. Chrik keep things easy, a
guitarist a drummer, and no mouth noises. Normally no vocals is
generally enough to bore both my arms clean off. Chrik get around this
by making all of their songs addictively moreish. We’ve got super
mathy jangling, widdles the entire pantheon. But where most others get
it wrong, these lot know how to keep the narritive driving through,
and ensure the music remains engaging, gleeful and beautiful in equal
measure. This isn’t for everyone, sure, but for upbeat mathy indie its
a damn fine effort

Live is the arena that they shine the most. When I saw them they set
up in the middle of the floor ran around a lot, played some hugely
catchy tunes, and looked like they were having an unwise amount of
fun. If you’d gone told me that in twenty ten a new Cap’n Jazzwalladr
band with a briefcase full of twiddles would have been worth a punt
I’d have smirked nice and big right up in your face. Looks like the
joke is on me. Damn.
