Sunday League - (d)EMO - Download (2010)

Labels: self released
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Following hot on the heels of the Ten Speed Bicycle review from the other day is this 4 track demo from these Northern fellows. The youngsters of the UK are clearly in an emo frame of mind. Maybe it’s the recession and university fees and the prospect of a long term Tory government, that’s enough to make even the sternest of the declarers of the war on emo put a cardy on and have a mope in the corner. Sunday League sound like Mid Carson July (before that band went wrong). I am pretty sure they weren’t going for that, but the wildly off-key vocals and poppy guitars that tend towards Cap’n Jazz and early Get Up Kids mean that is what it’s ended up sounding a bit like. This is certainly a work in progress, the songs aren’t quite ready for you to latch on to and obsess over, and the melodies are low-key and don’t quite make the impact of other bands that have played this music but this is entirely forgivable for an early demo. The occasional twiddle rears it’s head, but generally in a slow, pleasant fashion rather than bullying you into submission, and there are plenty of pretty guitar parts to make up for it. I am also not entirely a fan of the goofy song titles, that’s a modern Yankee trend that I don’t need in my ‘mo, but as bleated countless times on these pages, I’m not exactly a whippersnapper any more so who am I to judge.

Pretty sure they could do a split with 7″ with Ten Speed Bicycle in 6 months and send the kids wild. This is a promising beginning.
