Northless - Clandestine Abuse - 2xLP (2011)

Labels: Gilead Media – Halo Of Flies – Siege Of Power
Review by: Kunal Nandi

Northless’ first album “œNo Quarter For The Damaged” was a fine addition to the stoner hardcore canon, wherein bands make slow, low and heavy music with a nod towards the latter’s stripped-down approach. Northless stood out by combining the best of both, and dosing it with melancholic melody that kept things listenable. It’s a pleasure to report that the follow-up sees them coming a long way from those formative explorations, expanding the lineup from a duo to a quartet and producing this absolute beast of a double LP.

The sound is immense, with totally thunderous, head-crushingly discordant riffs raining down at tastefully placed intervals. The album as a whole is cohesive, with chugging, chundering tracks that somehow still don’t have an ounce of fat on them. It’s utterly satisfying when it hits home, which is often and accurately, with a sure sense of pace that builds to real payoffs time and time again. Highly recommended.
