Tol Eressea - Des fleurs de pierre au cÅ

Labels: self released
Review by: Jacob KiTR

With no writeup or description beyond “We are Tol Eressëa, punk band from France”, I didn’t really know what to expect going into this album. Musically, it reminds me a lot of modern crust bands, particularly bands like Sanctions. The drumming is fast and furious (although not as furious as say, Resurrectionists) and the guitars are driving. The vocals, on the other hand, are much more akin to french emo bands. Some of the songs really remind of Daitro’s desperate yell/sing approach, while other songs range from spoken word to an angrier yell. Because of this, none of the vocals are as punchy as I would expect from a crust band. I feel like when I listen to a band like Sanctions, it really pushes that angry, raging feeling. The vocals on this album miss that mark. Later in the album, the backup vocals come closer to what I’d like in a crust band, but it still doesn’t really cut it. Apart from the vocals, this album is actually pretty good for what it is. Needs more angry growling.

Can’t comment on the lyrics or the physical copy, as neither were provided, but the album art is sort of metalcore looking.
