Review by: Andy Malcolm
There’s some exciting bands knocking around on these shores of late, and I’d have to number Skylark amongst them, even if they might have doubted that this would ever get
reviewed. I have struggled with a few words as this is not strictly the kind of nonsense that I know a lot about. Skylark are (musically) big, lumbering bastards, playing a
hefty form of post-hardcore that features a lot of yelling, and a lot of CRUSHING. It’s been a while since I listened to Karp, but that’s one of the few reference points I have,
and it may well be horrendously wrong, but Skylark do that kind of big riffing thing, and fuse it with hardcore elements. It makes for a pretty pleasing record that is full of
bombastic and driving force. It’s the kind of noisy hardcore that I can get behind, any band that can groove will always get my attention and Skylark have a couple of songs on
here that give a sly wink to Shotmaker, particularly “Paper Machete”, which is a right belter. Also got to tip my hat to the lovely DIY production in the packaging here,
particularly the insert.
What we have here is what is known as a good record. I am not entirely sure who to recommend it to. Maybe people who like Karp and Shotmaker? That should rule out the people with the shit taste in music at least. Go listen to it down there below, that’ll help.
