This is a split involving Great Apes who I reviewed on here a while back. Both bands come from San Francisco and play punk rock with a poppy hue. The first side has two songs by Great Apes and they are similarly upbeat and raucous to the tracks on their debut 7inch – nothing new but decent driving, gruff punk rock. It remains to be seen if they can keep this consistency up over an album but a couple of tracks on a couple of 7inches is very promising so far.. Daikon take the B side with a track called “It’s Either Raining Or It’s Not”. They have opted for the rather unusual choice of naming themselves after a vegetable – in this instance, a white radish. Apparently if you ate an average sized one it would give you 34% of your RDA of vitamin C. I was going to tell you that I had never heard of Daikon – but clearly I have as there is an album on my computer that someone recommended to me. For some reason, I haven’t listened to them before. No matter – they lean more towards indie rock but still with a bit of punk thrown in. It’s quite good too – energetic, bouncy and catchy – the riff that leads it is pretty cool. So in this veritable tug of war between ape and radish, who will win? I think the radish takes it despite only contributing the one song – reason enough alone for me to finally give that album a listen.
