Finally available in the physical realm courtesy of a bunch of labels on both sides of the pond, “What Matters” has been floating about online for a long while now, picking up fans and good end-of-year notices on a gradually increasing basis.
First of all, do not confuse Godstopper with Godstomper. Second of all, it’s turning out to be really hard to convey how good Godstopper are to you, dear reader, because my usual trick of comparing them to a Band X is coming up blank, or rather, they make me think of a Band X crossed with a Band Y, except that Bands X and Y come from totally unrelated avenues.
To whit, think of an amped-up, metallised Shudder To Think. Or think of a drained, droney version of Earache weirdos Confessor with shorter hair. Or think of Chavez borrowing Torche’s guitars. Or just stop thinking and get deep into a dichotomous band where dream pop meets nightmare metal, with a healthily unusual mixing of chiming major chords and filthy bass stabs together with chanting underpinned by crushing doom.
This might sound like a horrid mish-mash or a calculated attempt to innovate, but much more often than not it clicks, flows and rocks in a way that totally nails it. Weird and great.
