Places to Hide - Almost Nothing - LP (2013)

What drew me in here was the boy/girl vocals. They both have a cool, lazy drawl about them but still have bags of attitude and swagger. First song, “Self Preservation” rides on the crest of a wave and a Swearin’-esque melody – they win me over early with this one. After that it’s a decent ride throughout – feels so 90s too. They have a rough, fuzzy edge to their punky indie rock and really those vocals make all the difference. Lyrically this is very 20-something-centric with talk of student loans, semesters and the like, so I guess I connect less on that front these days but nothing wrong with that. As far as choice cuts go, I’d pick that opener, “October” and the Joyce Manor-ish slower, shouty track called “Get Me Clean”. There is also a song called “Michael Jordan” and while I know nothing about basketball I admire the sentiment. I’d probably write a song called “Juninho” although if it had to be a current footballer it’d be tougher. Perhaps Rhys Williams…but then he’d probably leave on a transfer to Wigan or someone and then my song would be ruined. Sometimes it’s hard to pinpoint why I like something when it’s fairly straightforward but these guys just play really catchy, really good indie rock.
