John Bassett - Unearth - CD (2014)

Labels: Stereohead
Review by: Oli Saunders

John Bassett’s album Unearth is a pleasant tour of prog folk, with dreamy keyboards and gently strummed guitars played over the top of vocals reminescent of The Moody Blues. It feels experimental but parts embedded with tried and tested methods. Survival rate is an early highlight, with John layering two sets of vocals upon one another at times to great effect. There’s no shortage of interesting riffs throughout. Sure, it lacks the excellence of the likes of Pentangle but for me even to compare the two is a compliment. Something That’s More Worthwhile edges a little too far into the psychedelic but still shows class. Overall, an impressive effort.
