Twerps - Range Anxiety - LP (2015)

Labels: Chapter Music – Merge
Review by: MH

There is something in the water over here in Australia these days when it comes to this kind of jangly indie. I saw Twerps the other night for the first time and really they were fantastic. The song “Who Are You” is worth the price of entry alone. That song was from their first LP though. On to this one, then. After the subdued organ of the short instrumental opener, the drifty and laidback “I Don’t Mind” is ushered in. “Back To You” picks up the pace a tad and has a pretty huge chorus and just a great sound. I think the album works well as a whole – I’m not skipping tracks or anything. I read another review of this somewhere that said the song “Shoulders” is mediocre so I’m thinking there’s something wrong with my hearing as I think it’s one of the best songs on here. This track is sung by Julia who gets a decent chunk of the lead vocals across the record. The bouncy “Strangers” early on is another highlight. I like the boy/girl vocal interplay across the record too.

I don’t know how much people know about Twerps back home but they share enough in common soundwise to Dick Diver and Real Estate to suggest you’ll like Twerps if either of those bands are your bag. I haven’t quite worked out yet if I like this as much the self-titled LP – probably need a bit more time and a few more listens to decide that but I’ve been playing this one a fair amount since it came in and it’s a fine record.
