Pile Of Priests - Tenebrous Labyrinth - Download (2017)

Solid if vaguely unremarkable death metal that leans hard on the progressive side of things, which means much by way of thoughtful crunch and mellifluous sweep picking. Late-period Death is the main touchstone here, though the thinness of sound is also reminiscent of more ambitious thrash acts like Coroner, Paradox (minus the warble) and Watchtower. These inferences are further borne out by the songs the band covers to bolster their three originals, having a crack at classic tracks by Kreator, Coroner and Sadus. Overall it’s all fine as far as things go, but unlikely to lure you away from the 90s classics or, if you’re feeling modern, the last couple of Contrarian records.
