Brass Owl - s/t - Download (2018)

Labels: self released
Review by: Alex Deller

Despite song titles (‘Mushroom Sally’, ‘Land Shark’…) that make you think you might be in for some Nebula-style frazzle, Brass Owl play things with a straighter-than-straight bat that leaves the rock contained on their debut EP sounding ‘classic’ rather than ‘stoner’. The riffs are hefty and things are well played, but rather than running to burn my Free and Mountain records I’m instead cast back to a time when bands like Blow and The Dawn were lurking at the fringes of Kerrang!’s reviews section. This leaves us with four tracks of jolly if vaguely unadventurous rock … solid at core, and played with enough skill that with some judicious scrubbing they could feasibly join Rise Above’s retro stable alongside the likes of Troubled Horse.
