Feels like Eye Flys have really stepped it up here, with things sounding deadlier and dirtier than last year’s ‘Context’ EP. The songs have more room to breathe, heaving and yawing from riff to panel-beaten riff as tales of woe and bitter disbelief are unkindly snorted out. Unsane, Fudge Tunnel and Helmet sound like primary sources of inspiration … references were once played out, but now seem almost refreshing given how the past few years of punk rock revisionism have seen these bands pressure washed away in favour of Swans, No Trend and Fang. Alongside the industrialised grind and clank, however, are elements that recall the breathless menace of Kiss It Goodbye … welcome additions in their own right, and ones that seem to be setting this band on a far more distinctive path.
