Two tracks to celebrate a shared run of Euro dates. Sadly the bands didn’t make it to the UK, but to be honest I can’t say I blame them for deciding to give this rancid island a miss.
With their track, Split System prove once again that they are physically incapable of writing a bad song. It opens with a honking great Stooges riff and lobs in some jubilant lead work before Jackson Briggs’ vocals kick in: desperate and on edge, but thoroughly in command and with more than a whiff of Chris Bailey about them. As per usual, I absolutely love it.
Les Lullies suffer a bit from not being Split System, but it’s hard to hold that against them for too long. They play punchy, gobby, garagey punk that’s packed with attitude and grubby behind the years, but really tuneful with it. ‘À L’étroit’ zips by and leaves you wanting way more – if you have a thing for recent French acts like Pogy and Les Kefars or Zone Infinie then you’ll find plenty to enjoy here.
