Imbroco - Are You My Lionkiller? - CD (2000)

Labels: Deep Elm
Review by: Dan Baker

i’m beginning to work on my own conspiracy theories as to why mineral split up. after listening to this cd which contains two members of mineral, and the gloria record one which contains the other two members, i have decided that musical differences may have been the the cause. while the new gloria record ep continues mineral’s natural progression of getting mellower and mellower, imbroco have bounced off the wall and gone back the other way and beyond even the first mineral stuff.

this is is heavy yet poppy emo rock with post hardcore elements of dischord and metal blocking placed here and there. the vocals are sung nicely but not whinge-ily and then they get angry. i like it. the metal bits rule, they remind me of when i listened to the black album by metallica on repeat. hmm, maybe that isn’t so good.

bearing in mind these elements mentioned, some bits, especially the quiet ones and the harmonised vocals remind me of weezer, particularly on the pinkteron cd when they went weird (that’s weird for a mainstream band, by the way) which is not a bad thing at all.

this is a good solid rock album, especially considering it was their first release, and it is a damn shame they split up, as they could have produced better stuff than this for sure.
