Once again, the good people of Cheapo Discs in Uptown Minneapolis supply the insight to a purchase of another as yet unknown local talent for me to take apart and explain to your fine selves. Hooray! If ever music shopping in the Twin Cities, go to Cheapo.
The first impression is that The Misfires are a refreshing blend of music. This is what the true meaning of pop punk is – Clash-esque sounding guitars, a distinct lack of melody on behalf of the vocalists, but damn bouncy songs, that would only be right served with a smile. Comparisons are difficult, but if you must The Misfires sound almost like a very (read: VERY VERY) light hearted Dillinger 4, or perhaps a cross between Avail and some pop punk band like Fun Size or something like that.
Unfortunately, the guitars don’t really have enough meat or distortion behind them, which often leaves the songs sounding severely lacking in some respects. There’s plenty of the songs on this record that don’t make a huge impression on you, the listener.
However, “My Baby Gets Around” is not one of them. This tune makes the album worth listening to – punky rawk song of the highest order. Shouty vox and a catchy as fuck tune that will make you want to dance, mosh, kill people ect. What a song!
An under-produced and merely fair effort from a band that clearly has the capability to do better.
