Hmm, what’s happened here. That Captured Tracks 7″ had some really good songs on it, but Veronica Falls have taken a massive backward step here. Perhaps they were fed up with the Pains of Being Pure at Heart comparisons, but I think I would have enjoyed hearing that tried and tested indie pop formula over the faux eeriness and 60s garage pop inflections that pepper ‘Beachy Head’. It’s solid enough, but at the end rather lacking in the memorable stakes. A failed attempt. B-side “Staying Here” attempts to save the day, recorded at an incredibly low volume and sounding like a sad song from a film about a 1950s American high school or something. It’s very simple and quite effective, I certainly found it to be of more intrigue than it’s a-side sibling, but it also comes across like a demo, possibly a throwaway track from an older recording session. Hohum.
