Since agreeing at gunpoint to review albums for Collectivezine, I have become aware of certain corner-cutting tricks employed by lazy/arrogant fuckers to get out of doing the one thing that at some point they must have presumably expressed an affection for, namely listening to new music.
Often when a link gets sent to me from Collective, it takes me to Soundcloud and I can tell how many music reviewers have been there before me by looking at the counter on the first song. There are eight songs on this album by Fvnerals and here are the individual counters for each of them (accurate at 14:36 on 4-10-14).
1. 169
2. 120
3. 32
4. 29
5. 18
6. 17
7. 14
8. 11
A number of different things can be inferred from an analysis of the numbers above, but if I was a new band, I would make damn sure that the first two songs were the best ones because nobody other than your friends is ever going to hear any of the others.
It’s a shame really, because this here album of darkened ambient metal and it’s haunting, spectral vocals certainly gets better the longer it continues, infecting the room with its unnerving, ghostly presence – like a demonic Mazzy Star.
Well worth a (complete) listen and should you be about, they’re playing at The Old Blue Last on December 1st – go along, pay your money and if you don’t like it, you can leave after the first two songs.
