Coffin Torture – Dismal Planet – Download (2018)

Hah, this is the best kind of horrible! Coffin Torture are ostensibly a sludge act, but comparing them to the myriad bands tugging off recycled Fu Manchu riffs to Aaron Turner vocals would be doing them a massive disservice. The riffs here are so blitzed and detuned that they’re practically soup, and the vocals sound like the guy’s choking on endless mouthfuls of rancid dog fur. Occasionally you get the sense of an Iron Monkey/Eyehategod lollop, but things are so crumbly at the edges that any sense of normal rhythm or structure is rendered fairly moot. Apt comparisons are fairly thin on the ground (a less robotic Legion Of Andromeda? A less hardcore Fistula? The Body without the art?), but suffice it to say that if you like your sludge gross, slimy and crawling with bugs then this should certainly fit the bill…
