Seems the seven-year itch has struck again, with Brainoil rising from their Oakland pit to unleash another terrifying slab of punked-up metal. ‘Singularity To Extinction’ is the band’s finest outburst to date, perfectly distilling foul-smelling doom, crust punk and mangle-limbed death metal into one unwholesome lump. The thing manages to ooze in multiple directions while sounding utterly focused and surefooted, the riffs schlurping like bodies pulled from peat bogs and the vocals veering from suppurating shrieks to dank, clotted, pit-of-the-belly grumbles. In many regards it feels like a culmination … the sound of a band that has gathered its strength and is now exactly where it needs to be at this precise point in time. It’s a powerful, full-sounding, brute of a thing, and one that demands your immediate, undivided attention.
