Always keen to check out a new funeral doom act, and the urge to do so was even stronger here thanks to the genetic links with the excellent Astriferous. ‘Mourning In Funereal Miasma’ comprises one long, pained ode to suffering, captured live in the band’s practice space. Aeons seem to pass between drumbeats and guitar parts brood morosely before blossoming into full-blown rot, and, as for the vocals, they sound like the grumbling lament of a primitive hominid who’s being slowly swallowed by a peat bog. The muffled edges and lack of studio crispness add to the claustrophobic density rather than detract from it, neatly capturing the early steps of this queasily majestic new entity. Fans of Worship and Thergothon, take note.
