There’s absolutely no messing around with this 20-minute LP from Toronto’s Depleted Uranium: a ragged, jagged blast of chaos that twists painfully in on itself as it tries to make sense of this stupid existence we all happen to share. Grindcore and math metal jar nastily up against each other, and while the press release mentions power violence I don’t detect that as a reference point so much – more that patch in the early 00s when metal and grind began to seep into the screamo scene, or when Per Koro began releasing records by bands like Inane and Aclys. The madcap blurs and parched vocals are neatly offset by needling dissonance, portentous dynamics and brief moments of near-fragility, making for a release that might feature numerous familiar elements but at least sees them soldered together in cruel and interesting ways.
