Model Village - Healing Centre - LP (2015)

Labels: Post Pop Records
Review by: MH

There is a model village near where I grew up in Bucks…oh, wait, no, I told that story last time. Last time I reviewed Model Village was apparently 2011 and it looks like they’ve released loads of music since then. They have a new vocalist too in Lily Somerville. Model Village play light and clean indie pop and it’s worth noting that the band members have been at this music lark for a while now – this is folk who used to play in bands who sound nothing like this in Hey Colossus and Econoline. The sound here fits in well with how The Popguns sound these days. The male and female vocals are a nice fit too. The female vocals lead the majority of the songs and are nice and warm – every now and then I’m reminded of Sarah Cracknell from St. Etienne. The songs have titles that remind me of being back home like “Pick and Mix”, “Junction 30” and “Family Restaurant” – they even sing about Heathrow Airport at one point. Lyrically, everything feels real and down to earth. Listening to this makes me feel pretty nostalgic and think more about certain things from back home. I’d pick out the melancholy “Funny Things” as my favourite track on here – it’s a brilliant pop song. This is nice, gentle music – it’s also lovely music and makes me want to go back and check out the releases I’ve missed out on since 2011.
