This band recorded this in Argentina. I don’t think I have ever heard a band from Argentina before, then again, I am not 100% sure they are from Argentina having looked at their website which mentions the NME, the Sun and the esteemed Mr. Anthony J. Blair. Whilst their e-mail address is has a Spain suffix. Any, Del Funicular play a noodly post-rock instrumental thing. On “Intra Experimenta Agere”, guitars rumble along and chime in here and there, with lots of distortion and fuzz going on. They also have some fizzing FX that sound like sounds from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (a good thing, get the DVD it’s amazing!). It is fairly loud post-rock but it’s by no means pure noisy stuff. It has a structure but isn’t in desperate need of vocals. That’s how I mostly judge this style – if it sounds like it needs vocals (GHOSTS AND VODKA YOU ARE THE PRIME SUSPECT) then it’s probably rubbish. Del Funicular make a good job of things without sounding like they need a dude back there spouting off. So that’s fine by me. Although on “Muere” they do actually get someone in to sing a bit, in the background, very quietly. It only lasts a couple of minutes anyway.
Things are creative, they have good build ups and inteludes and hit grooves effectively. It reminds me of earlier stuff by the likes of bands such as Reynolds where they would just hit these intense grooves and go on to play killer instrumental rock tracks that last 5 minutes and don’t bore you. Track 2 “Core” is something special in particular. Stands out for me on this disc. The final track is immense too, it builds up at a snails pace, and sounds like it is going to just splurge out of your speakers any minute and fill your room up with some kind of weird goo.
This is really something pretty good, I hope they really are Argentinian but it’s not important I suppose. If you like post rock, go find a copy.
