Old Growth - 12XU - split - 7

It’s been a while since I listened to Old Growth. The first LP on Bakery Outlet is a highly solid album. With an amusing cover. On this split they are back with two songs, and they catch me off guard with “Hey Young”, a sinewy, Hot Snakes / Drive Like Jehu style rocker – muscled up drumming combines with forceful riffage and wailed vocals. Old Growth nail it on this one, I am generally partial to this kind of approach to rock and roll, brains and brawn go well together. “A Year in the Dirt” is more of what I’d expect from these guys, filtering a bit of country rock into their indie. Flip for Frenchies 12XU and you should be pretty impressed. This was the first material I had heard by them (I’ve since checked out a couple of sevens). It’s weird as the production and the song sound exactly like something on Snuffy Smiles from a few years ago. “Terre D’Inconnus” is melodic and driving, with great strained vocals and a killer bass line grooving it’s way. This is somewhere between emo and post punk, which generally produces some pretty awesome music when in the right hands. I am pretty sure that the 12XU guys have all been around in bands for a while, so it’s no surprise to hear them come up with something as good as this. Really keen to hear an LP from this band.

Super tight split – these bands should tour the UK together.
