Us Fighting - The Hundred Star - CD (2011)

Labels: Am I Daemon
Review by: John

Us Fighting’s debut CD The Hundred Star has a number of objectionable aspects. I could quite easily
(and justifiably) spend this review complaining about the shrink-wrapping, the shameless one-pager
and the perplexing artwork. However, what is obvious is that the band spent alot of time; money and
energy making and releasing this record, so I darn well better try to put a bit of effort into it.

The Hundred Star is 9 long tracks of heavy, alternative rock music. Admittedly some of the
songs such as The Lantern and the opening track Nyx are pretty catchy and it is hard to fault the
musicianship or the recording itself. To my Australian ears they sound like a grungy Butterfly Effect
(Australia’s premier alternative metal band). Or perhaps instead, on account of their longer, more
mathy rock parts, The Hundred Star might have been the album June of 44 made if they had decided
to follow Earth Crisis and Integrity’s example and put out a year 2000 nu-metal album.

Lyrically the album is pretty flat. Lines printed on the inside cover include, “œI get away just in time to
see your neon life implode”, and “œstill I hunt, yeah still I run, the universe bends and Orions work is
undone”. Kind of reminds me of Mystik Spiral lyrics. Overall a pretty average record. Sorry guys.
