Off Camber - Cat. 4 Upgrade - Tape (2012)

Pretty cool demo from this New Jersey four-piece, and while the four tracks whizz by in less than five minutes there’s more than enough to mull over and keep you coming back. First track ‘Group Ride’ has the gall to waste 14 seconds of its single minute with restless amp-warming-up noise before exploding into 25 seconds of spasmodic emoviolence (think the one-sided Palatka LP or End Of The Century Party’s ‘Songs, Dances, Drums’ 7″), ultimately crashing out with some scrawny, lurching chugs. Said chugs surface again on ‘Cages’, each one trebly and certifiably-non-metallic but strangely effective with it, especially when punctured by vocalist Megan’s wire-rubbed shrieks. ‘Adventure Till Death’ is mid-paced and features a strange, whinnying guitar line while the positively epic ‘There’s No Solace Like Desolation’ clocks in at a whopping minute and fifty-three seconds of dissonant jags and scuttling guitar lines that’re reminiscent of a more shambolic Off Minor or an early UOA practise session. In the time it took you to read all that you could probably have listened to the tape once through for yourself, but in case you can’t multitask then I’ll just say this: it’s a good ‘un “” caustic, raw and sounding satisfyingly on the brink of falling apart at any given moment.
