Wrekmeister Harmonies - Night of Your Ascension - CD (2015)

Labels: Thrill Jockey
Review by: Captain Fidanza

I remember listening to the previous album from this band and thinking it sounded like an aural representation of the film from which they took their name “” mysterious, impenetrable, otherworldly magnificence the like of which I had rarely encountered.

The two new pieces of music on this this new album were influenced by:

1. A sixteenth century Italian Prince and musical pioneer who murdered and mutilated the bodies of his wife and her lover.

2. A twentieth century Roman Catholic paedophile priest, who was strangled and stomped to death by a white supremacist serving life without possibility of parole.

With this in mind, it might come as something of a surprise to learn that a hidden track on the CD is a faithful rendering of Shed Seven’s 1994 hit Speakeasy, itself re-written and recorded by the notorious York 5-piece, as a jingle for the now defunct mobile phone company The Link.

Inscrutable.
