Chung Antique - Artesian Swell / Norse Code - 7

Labels: Electricity/Lust
Review by: Alex Deller

Every few years we get sent a Chung Antique release, which is getting to be like receiving intermittent birthday cards (usually featuring a yacht, a steam engine or a crudely-rendered footballer scoring a wonderful goal) from a slightly dotty relative you’ve otherwise lost touch with. It’s odd and out of the blue, but also rather nice. This beautifully-packaged 7″ features two songs, both of which are in keeping with the band’s tradition for drawn-out instrumental rock music. Things froth and sparkle, occasionally getting all spaced-out and FX-tangled, at other points whumping on the distortion and rocking out some. Overall the sound recalls DeSoto and Dischord releases of the late 90s/early 00s, or that point in UK DIY history when you couldn’t turn around at a gig without bumping into a Gringo Records band like Reynolds, Soeza or Hirameka Hi-Fi.
