Nine albums and 21 years in, Darkest Hour are still going strong. I’ve been dipping in and out for maybe half of their career, and while I’ve rarely been disappointed they’ve never really set my world alight either. ‘Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora’ follows suit: a violent whirlwind of Gothenburg-inspired metalcore that’s all raw vocals, naked aggression and riffs that teeter between tangled and face-punchingly direct. Bizarrely (and admirably!) for a band who’ve been at it so long, the band are still possessed of an unholy fire, and they don’t allow the fact that they’re so comfortable with their craft to let them drift into complacency. It’s good, solid, rollicking stuff, and while it mightn’t be revelatory ‘Godless Prophets…’ sees Darkest Hour ably keeping pace with many of the younger, rawer bands they’ve inspired along the way.
