Cicutoxin - Pigeon Hunt - split - LP (2015)

Labels: Rämekuukkeli
Review by: Alex Deller

Cicutoxin are doing something weird but great. The pace and construction are slow, morose and utterly doom-like, but the sound itself is thin, rangy and more akin to something like Throat. Then there are the vocals, which sound slobberingly bereft and make you want to give the singer a big consoling hug to make up for the fact that life’s so unutterably awful. Grief meets Janitor Joe, maybe? Perhaps. Whichever way you cut it, though, their side is pretty majestic.

Pigeon Hunt ½sound like all those bands that bought synths after they heard the first Locust album. Fifteen years ago the world was clogged with such acts, now it almost seems like a novelty. The songs are punchy, awkward and neatly constructed, and just about manage to navigate the boundary that separates ‘fun’ from ‘annoying’. One song has a sax dribbling all over it, and the lyrics focus on bodily fluids and anal sex. To be honest they’re no Guyana Punchline and not nearly as outré as they might think they are, and the most confounding thing about them is probably that their side spins at 45 while Cicutoxin’s goes at 33. Still, they’re a significant improvement on early 00s also-rans like An Albatross and Black Castle, and this at least counts for something.
