Seems almost like a slap across the chops when a band appears out of nowhere with a demo this humungous and this together. You could ostensibly chalk it up to lineage and experience (members have served with everyone from Rat Cage and Groak to The Afternoon Gentlemen and Lugubrious Children) but there’s definitely something a bit ‘extra’ at play – as though cursed stars have finally aligned in order to unleash some sort of cosmic woe upon humanity. In case the name didn’t give it away, Mortuary Spawn play slime-dripping death metal that pays fealty to the genre’s elder gods. Blastbeats hammer viciously away while shit-slicked riffs lunge purposefully through muck and mire, and if there’s a moment to catch breath it’s loaded with so much dread you almost wish they’d just start up with the stomach-churning brutality again. Depending on which way you look at the thing you can make comparisons to Morbid Angel, Entombed and Suffocation, and while there might be scads of bands making similar claims these guys are clambering their way towards the top of the corpsemound thanks to their savagery, attack and knack for tempering wanton, gut-level heaviness with actual, real-life songs.
