Name of the band had me figuring they might be peddling some sort of Chris Dodge homage, but turns out I was fairly wide of the mark. While I wouldn’t be surprised if at least someone in this band had a Spazz record or two in their collection the feel is more along the lines of the latterday stompy stuff doing the rounds: bands like Cell, Necro Heads and Spy (with whom Caveman share members). The riffs are so simple that they can’t help but be catchy, sounding thoroughly intentional in terms of how rudimentary they are. For all the feedback and fist-to-throat violence, though, there’s a sort of cleanliness to the sound which means you don’t miss a single detail. This is admirable in a way since it leaves nowhere to hide in the songwriting stakes, but personally a little more grit, wildness and intrigue would’ve turned up the heat and ensured this one was more than merely ‘solid’.
