Discount - As Friends Rust - split - 7

Labels: Good Life
Review by: Andy Malcolm

We all love Discount here at Collective, so it’s always nice to pick up new songs by them. And seeing as they put out approximately 934 records per week, that’s not too hard. In fact, if you personally asked them to do you a song, they probably would. Even if no-one else got to hear it.

This, um, apparently Belgian release features a pair of ‘count songs. “Portrait of a Cigarette” is short and sweet, I wouldn’t write home about it, mainly because my parents probably wouldn’t care. They’d phone me up and ask why I sent them a postcard about a song by some bunch of Americans. Better is “History is History”, which is that power pop punk thing that is the bands trademark. Pretty upbeat and crunchy, Alison’s vocals rule. What else can I say, if you haven’t heard Discount, more fool you. If you have, you’ll know it’s pretty damn good.

As Friends Rust contribute a track which would be a godsend to any boy who ever will need to make a comp tape for that special someone, what with it being entitled “The First Song On The Tape You Make Her”. Kind of a give away though I guess, once she reads the title on the inlay card. The lyrics will save you the bother of having to say anything either, just photocopy them and put them in the post. Gee, where’s all the romance gone? Heh. Anyway, AFR play sort of like Hot Water Music and a band that is more straightahead hardcore. It’s melodic punk rock with a hardcore lilt, and some shouty vocals that sometimes get a bit more frantic and the gang shouts are neat too. It’s kind of funny hearing all these guys shouting out “YOU LOOK LIKE LOVE”, like it was some political slogan. I rather like these guys, they have a sense of humour.
