Pave the Rocket - Taken In - CD (1998)

Labels: Deep Elm
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Got this a while back now, but within a couple of listens I knew it was something I wasn’t going to persist with too much. And now that I have work to do, which I’d rather not, so I’m writing a review of an album I don’t like that much instead.

Pave the Rocket do a rather strange mix of sometimes indie and often heavyish rock music. It comes across as fine on tracks such as opener “Drool”, but others are quite dirgy and heavy. Messy even. “Remora” is another example where they blend the quiet emo sound with the more driving and slow heavy guitars. It’s ok, but it doesn’t quite do it for me. I have to say I like the less abrasive efforts a lot though, particularly on the more indie rocking “Little One”.

Can’t quite pin any comparisons on them, “Facesmash” has a little Braid (less pop) in it if I am thinking straight, but apart from that Pave the Rocket either have their own sound, or I haven’t heard any bands they are influenced by.

Not my thing really right now, but any of you peeps who dig unpredictable, noisy rock music that is a little different from what Kerrang tells you is good due to the fact that certain record companies give them lots of money, might go a bundle on it.
