Plans & Apologies - Spiderz in the Bar - CD (2006)

Labels: Exercise1
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Supposedly there is 7 blokes in this band, which seems a bit of an overkill! They all have “funny” fake names that will make you punch yourself in the head in stupidity. Putting that irrelevance aside, this is a catchy little effort. Plans & Apologies have a jangly, poppy indie sound which perhaps slots in between the Wedding Present and American Football?! Maybe. Its Sunday afternoon and I haven’t written a review in ages, so forgive my rustiness, the “Comparison Engine” has been lubricated a little too well with ale this weekend and is in need of some tweeking. Anyways. The guitars jangle and twinkle very pleasantly, sometimes hinting at the idea that the band have heard some midwest emo at some point. The song lurches off into a rather un-necessary “freaky” rock out at the end that I would have quite happily dispensed with. Not to worry, because whilst they are concentrating on their tunes they are decidedly enjoyable. The vocals are strong and the singers voice is pleasingly devoid of American accent. AWESOME, DUDE! The second track is just as good as the first, and the third has a beautiful intro that is straight out of the midwestmo song book. Again its a solid track although the occasional keyboard (possibly) interference bugged my ears.

Very impressive all round, nice to hear a blend of English and American indie done in a fresh sounding way and applied well.
