We were due a new “generation” of UK emo bands, now that most of the last lot have gotten old and into shitty noise / shitty drone / shitty dubstep / shitty stuff peddled by Volcanic Tongue / all of the shitty above. When people grow out of hardcore they really know how to go to the next level of shittiness. Regardless of all that shit Railway Ghosts, Imagination Arrow (pick of the bunch) and Lionface are three of those new emo bands. RG have an 8 song demo here, under-produced, rough and ready emo that crosses the widdle of Hot Cross with the piddle of What Price, Wonderland? A messy mix, stuffed with talky vocals and what worryingly sounds like guitar solos from time to time. Less of that please guys! Beyond that, Railway Ghosts are an energetic bunch with an ear for a solid melody. Being a new band, their songs are very basic in places, but they do show a lot of promise, and it is a demo after all. “Harum Scarum” shows a knack for blending the melody with Van Pelt style guitars, talky vocals too high in the mix lurching all over the place, replete with accents. It then all hurtles off like the Bash Street Kids, getting into trouble again. Sweet stuff. For the most part they have a lot of fiddly midwestmo style guitars, that often rampage into the distance whilst someone chats over the top. That’s a sound that will always go down well with myself. Well played! Band name incorporates two emo elements too, bonus.
