Glockenspiel - Enspiel - CD (2007)

Labels: Krayon Records

Glockenspiel’s newest release provides yet more blanketing respite from the harshness of reality, as Adrian Dollemore’s blissfully transcendental guitar work alternates between soothingly atmospheric melodies adrift in an ocean of ambient sound, and fairly dense sinister drone pieces. The disparity is a little jarring, not helped by the way songs seem to just suddenly end, but this is not unwelcome when what the songs do in between opening and closure is real sonic exploration of a rare type. The music smoothly slips into your cranium unawares, unobtrusively plucking your synapses in a most pleasurable way, and the creepy moments are genuine look-over-your-shoulder moments. In the live setting, Dollemore enlists Steve D’Enton, ex-of Quickspace, to provide backup on drums, and the effect is much more energetic and upfront, whilst keeping the pleasant melodics and drones intact. I prefer that to this, but it’s all good baby.
