Hearts of Darknesses - Shit Fan Punx Get Busted - LP (2009)

Labels: Deleted Art

This album begins by sounding like some drunkards freestyling over some disco beats. No, make that hard drug users. With a name like “Shit Fan Punx Get Busted” I did indeed wonder what I was in for. Turns out it’s strangely catchy. I can almost make out some radio static in the background, but I imagine it was probably made by a Microkorg. Moving onto the second track they continue with their electronic beats, with a beat that I can only liken to the Ting Tings ‘That’s Not My Name’. I’m straining slightly to make out the lyrics, and failing miserably. Nevermind. This “song” sounds like it should be going somewhere, but never seems to reach it’s target. I’m also reminded of Xiu Xiu a little. So, it’s onto track three, and the sample sounds like something from a Throbbing Gristle record. This guy sure does like screaming in a strangled fashion. I truly am at a loss as to what genre to pigeonhole these fellas as. So I’ll make one up. Post-disco-breakbeat-screamcore. Seems to do them justice. I definitely know a few people who’d like this stuff. Track 4 is instantly more catchy – I can even make a guitar riff. Think of Patrick Wolf if he was less structured and more off the wall. Now that has to be an achievement. I’m most certainly grooving to track 4. I can imagine it being quite a good track to play at about 3am when everyone is mashed and really freaking them out. Track 5 is the closing track and I can’t quite work out whether it is a girl ‘singing’ or if they’ve made use of the pitch shifter. I’m guessing the latter. Overall, I’m not too sure what to make of this album. It’ll probably be something I turn to in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep, in the hopes that it’ll scare me enough into nightmares. Or just if I’m feeling really sadistic.
