Pswingset - demo - CD (2009)

Labels: self released
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Kind of a goofy name, but I guess it fits the music, as it’s the kind of name that a band would have picked in the late 90s, and gone on to play slightly poppy, yet involved and interesting indie / emo music. The band that this mosts bring to mind for me is Chris Broach’s Firebird Suite / Project, back when they were making emo music. I think this is because of the vocals, which are mostly sung in an almost monotone fashion, not quite talked but not with a particular range. The guitars are choppy and bouncey but with a real nice feel. They also work the bass well, pushing the songs along were necessary. “What Wolf You Do” rolls like a train through countryside, bringing to mind the later work of Boilermaker. Pswingset’s song writing is not quite there yet, these are 3 solid songs that are sure to appeal if you are the only other person left in the world who still wants to listen to bands playing this kind of music. I miss those days and Pswingset make me smile, I hope they can go on and tighten things up and produce a whole album’s worth of this style, as that is when it is best experienced, given room to breathe and develop. One to keep an eye on for sure.
