Royal Thunder - s/t - CD (2011)

Labels: Relapse
Review by: Alex Deller

Given the fact that large chunks of their back catalogue possess a brutal and/or forward-thinking edge it’s somewhat weird that Relapse have chosen to release something as safe and staid as this. At a push it could be conceived as Kylesa lazily jamming out some Free covers, but that’s largely because (a) they both have female singers and (b) Royal Thunder possess a touch more heaviness and slightly more originality than the middle-aged men endlessly rehashing ‘Red House’ and ‘Spoonful’ at the Pig & Whistle’s weekly open mic night. Solidly played and drearily good for what it is, but when that “what it is” represents something even my Bonnie Raitt-loving father might cock a snook at you have to wonder why anyone out there should really give much of a fuck.
