No Motiv - Winterlong - CD (2011)

Labels: Siren
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Good grief, No Motiv? I was expecting to find an ancient review of this band in the site archives, probably written by Russ Opie, but either that never happened or the review got lost in the shuffle over the years. I can’t really remember what they used to sound like, but I would have hazarded a guess that they were a bit more pop punk than they come across here, which is a kind of cheesey, alt-rock / post emo fashion. That’s not to say it’s awful, my tolerance for this genre totally relies on the band doing it right, and No Motiv at least get the atmosphere right here. The songs are a bit samey unfortunately, and none of them manage to stand out. I am going to compare them to Solea. So there you go. Cheesey, post-emo cheese rock that may appeal to older folk looking to reminisce a bit, but for people like me that barely remember them, there’s not a lot here to get behind I’m afraid. My assumption is that it was a bunch of friends getting back together to try and recapture old times, nothing wrong with that, but unless you are a die-hard, I doubt this will be of much interest to you.
