Dads - American Radass (This Is Important) - LP (2012)

Labels: Flannel Gurl Records
Review by: MH

There is a review on this website from another Dads from Tampa doing garagey stuff. This is a duo from New Brunswick doing something that veers from laidback twinkling to rockier, more raucous bouts of noisier, fuzzier guitar and drums. They sound like they listen to a bit of Cap’N Jazz, American Football and Algernon Cadwallader. I have seen them tagged as that kind of “œparty emo” and they were also serial offenders in that “#emoisagang” scandal that was doing the rounds on Twitter a while back but let’s not go into that here. I’m not sure how it works when they play live but one of them plays both bass and drums on the record. Both of them take their turn on the vocals with one of them sounding a bit drawled and lazy. It’s pretty raw and ramshackle in its nature but they have a keen ear for melody. Also, they make a healthy amount of noise for a duo. The solid opener drifts along nicely and waves of guitar and cymbals come and go. Many of the songs get a bit louder and rollicking. Perhaps the best song on this album is also the longest – the lyrically introspective “œShit Twins”. It is nearly 7 minutes long and really good “” it rolls along slowly and opens with American Football-style twinkling and lazy vocals before everything gets a bit more noisy just after the halfway mark. This is the song that I keep coming back to. They do crank up the rocking regularly “” see the likes of “Get To the Beach” and “Groin Twerk” for more raucous moments. Those tracks are more upbeat musically and this is a fairly upbeat and raucous record in the main even if the lyrics are not. I’m into this “” really good stuff.
