Run, Forever - Settling - LP (2012)

Labels: Tiny Engines
Review by: MH

Run, Forever took a bit of a kicking on a previous review on here early last year for playing “boring” punk rock but that has not stopped them coming back for more with this new album. I actually quite liked that last album though so this review might be more positive particularly as I also think this is their best stuff yet. In fact, it is way better than the debut album.

That last album was lyrically influenced by the death of a former band member. This album kicks off with “Good Enough” which is a good example of the personal and introspective feel to a lot of the lyrics and songs on here. They also pack more of a fleshed-out sound than before. The guitars have a bit more drive and fuzz now and the vocals still have a downbeat way about them which recalls Tigers Jaw and maybe a distant Conor Oberst. Most tracks are mid-paced and there is one sad, weary acoustic track on here. They fall somewhere between punk rock and indie rock on the whole.

I am less into punks high-fiving each other and blithering on about basement parties so I think it’s refreshing to hear something like the self-deprecating tones of Run, Forever. Having said that, my favourite song on here may well be the one called “Basement”. I like every song on here though and my favourite track is changing daily. Definitely give this a listen if you liked their previous stuff or bands like Tigers Jaw.
