Papaya - UM/I - LP (2013)

Labels: Adagio830
Review by: Ted Reynolds

I really really like this, its like the Ex Models before they turned into a band that just played one riff over and over. And over. I think they are from Portugal, and it’s all skronky, herky jerky ‘spazzy’ indie punk. It’s disco drumming, high ‘campy’ vocals, great riffs, everything drenched in the effect you get if you fiddle with your delay pedal so it sounds a bit like a naughty bell.

It skips between the perfect place of high paced Ex Models pop, and more kraut rocky elements.
For me it reminded me of the glory days of my home town Exeter, when there were a variety of bands playing all sorts of interesting music rather than 300 bands all trying to either be Little Richard or Bruce Springsteen – but y’know ‘punk’ (I fucking hate Bruce Springsteen – I don’t know where the sort of weird punkers appreciation of Springsteen club has come from, but I am willing to blame Hot Water Music (I’d blame them for everything wrong today though)). It was a time when bands like An Emergency (pre- Cold Pumas) were playing this kind of music, and it’s thoroughly enjoyable.

The record looks lovely as well. It’s a great record and I would heartily recommend its purchase.
