Shorts - Berlin, 1971 - 7

I was going to describe Shorts as some form of geographically challenged supergroup encompassing members of Real Estate and Titus Andronicus from the US as well as Scott & Charlene’s Wedding from Australia. However, a few minutes of internet research told me that Scott & Charlene’s Wedding are now based in Brooklyn which obviously makes this band’s life a lot easier. Also explains why I haven’t managed to see them play in Australia yet. Soundwise, you’ll notice some similarities to some of those related bands during these four tracks. The opening title track is my pick of the songs on here and the guitar lines are very Real Estate although the track is a little more upbeat than their last record, particularly lyrically as the track is full of optimism. It’s a sunshine-kissed indie track and is nicely laidback. “Happy 10th Birthday” is up next as things get experimental and play with time signatures. The next track is a bigger song that features more of a drawn-out dancey influence before “She Feels The Sting” brings things back closer to the style of the opener with those familiar guitar lines. This is an interesting beginning and I’ll be taking note of what they do next.
