Joe Evans - Septimal - CDR (2014)

Labels: Runningonair Music – Spectropol
Review by: Captain Fidanza

A second release from Runningonair and it’s as bafflingly brilliant as all the others have been. This one was “œcreated from recordings of improvisations on the Autoharp” and if you have any idea what the hell that means, please let me know.

Song number 8 is called “œFury” which was the title of Fritz Lang’s first American film and concerns a man (played by Spencer Tracy) who is wrongly accused of kidnapping a child and is almost lynched by an angry mob. Should Lang’s film ever be remade, this music would provide a brilliant soundtrack to the many flashbacks of the incident, as the story is continually retold and distorted to ever more intense effect by the enraged townspeople.

There is undeniably something here which speaks of a gradual descent into madness, something largely absent from the previous albums from this label, which have often been characterised by more soothing, lilting sounds. Either way, it’s yet another triumph for Runningonair to add to their long and proud history of never releasing something that sounds quite like anything else.
