Depressor - Filth / Grace - LP (2014)

Labels: Fuck Yoga
Review by: Alex Deller

Have to say that I wasn’t at all familiar with Depressor before picking this one up, but just figured anything that came out on Fuck Yoga was usually worth a punt. In all honesty I’d been expecting something crustified, and while there are some such elements at play they tend to be relegated to vibe and sentiment rather than the sound itself. Instead the music is chunky, chuggy and often somewhat mechanical, reminding me more of that patch in the 90s where Earache was putting out records by Godflesh, Pitchshifter and Misery Loves Company and Max Cavalera was mucking around with Alex Newport. Things are gloomily belligerent and the songs are neatly put together, covering topics like the environment, animal rights and the overall piggish nature of men. I couldn’t tell you how the remastering compares to the original tapes, but all in all it sounds pretty darn good to me.
