Yoga - Azur - Tape (2015)

Labels: Spaeti Palace
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Huge tasty riff to get this one kicked off, just the way I like it. Yoga come bustling out of Berlin, bleak as you like. The opening track is hefty yet airy, kind of in a similar way to that excellent Hollow Sunshine LP I reviewed not so long ago, although not quite as good (fair enough, that’s one of the best things I’ve heard in 2015). They take a slightly different turn on the fuzzy “œMilchwald” which is full of dream-pop shimmer and soars righteously, it’s the kind of thing you used to get out of Wild Nothing a few years back. And between those two songs you get a good idea for what you’re going to receive over the course of this 5 track EP. Sometimes stark, sometimes blossoming, always German. This is rather good indeed and definitely suited to the kind of weather we have right now that sees you spending more than a few minutes of your morning coughing your lungs out whilst scraping several milimeters of ice off the car windscreen. If you like Antarctica but with a bit of Public Image Limited, you might fancy this. They get extra points because in the email they sent me asking if we’d consider reviewing this, they name dropped Shokei.
