Odd record, this. Been listening to it a lot since it came out, but still can’t decide whether I love it or just like it. At heart, the band play atavistic rock n’ roll. Sure, things are ragged round the edges and there’re definitely elements of Lux Interior and Jello Biafra to the vox, but if you give it a good polish on your handkerchief you’ll uncover glints of Sun Records and, in cuts like ‘Cindy Lou’, something more in line with Roy Orbison or Buddy Holly than the usual Lumpy fare. That’s not to say that things are apple pie wholesome, however … just look at the sleeve, which doesn’t feature clean-cut young men wearing matching suits but a naked creep with a fishing rod poking out of his arse.
